Vaccination in India-notes

Edward Jenner is called the "father of immunology". How did you come up with his vaccine? vaccine comes from vacca, the Latin word for the cow. Indians had widely  used cowpox pus for treatment. Milkmaids told him of using cowpox pus to ward off smallpox.

The cowpox pus treatment emerged from the Ayurvedic concept of "Similar cures similar", which is the idea behind vaccines.

Kashmiri Pandit speaker on exodus day in San Jose: "Two of my cousin brothers had gone to a friend's wedding. My teenaged cousin sister, <name-withheld-by-me> Ganjoo had gone to a friend's place. She was abducted there. The abduction had been planned by the 'friend''s family.

She met a gruesome fate. She was dead in 4 days.

My cousin brothers were abducted as well from the wedding. The abduction was planned by their friend's family. One brother was tied up with stones & thrown into the river.

The other brother managed to escape, swim across the river & reach the security forces across the river, and he managed to survive."

In the KP exodus candle-light vigil yesterday, a masked cyclist with blaring speakers on his back suddenly showed up circling around, drowning out the speeches. He kept ignoring security's requests to shut down the speakers or leave.

KP speaker in exodus day in SJ: "My nanaji, a gentle man working in the electricity department, had planned to leave the next day. He was captured, shot through his hands in his face & body as they raised to defend his body.

As he lay dying & asked for water, he was dragged to a filthy gutter. When he died, the terrorists chanted slogans. A group of 'innocent onlookers' cheered.

In his dead body procession, people threw sweets. I was 17 when this happened, an eye-witness."

At a certain point, a motorcyle with 3 guys started following us. They followed us all the way to the temple & alighted when we did.

Our ancestral temple in a village close the border was in terrible shape. When we were in, they just stood outside & observed us. It was unnerving.

We then left, and have never returned since."

Kashmiri Pandit speaker on exodus day event in San Jose: "My grandfather was a brilliant man. He was a 1952 graduate from University of Wisconsin. He had returned to the Kashmir valley to work in the electricity department.

When he had gone to the market, there was a bomb blast. He had multiple shrapnel wounds. One was close to his aorta.

However, there was a problem. The doctors in Srinagar, the so called educated class whose duty is towards the patients, would simply drain the blood of the Hindu patients, causing their death. He couldn't be taken there.

A relative was still in the valley. He was a very successful businessman with lots of ties. He was allowed to live as long as he paid off the various terrorist organizations operating in the valley. His driver was the conduit. We contacted him.

He had his driver pick up my wounded uncle, paid off people to allow transportation outside the valley & drove him to Delhi where he was treated. He survived but became deaf in a ear.

The first thing that happens with deafness is that gradually, people stop talking to you. And you stop talking to people. He would be silent for days.

With PTSD, whenever he was out, such as walking in the market, any abrupt loud noise would terrify him. He ended up with dementia & died."
